Alan Wake / Stanger than Fiction
Jan. 3rd, 2011 08:55 pmI just realized how much this video game reminds me of the older movie. Different genres, to be sure. Fiction runs like a comedy, and Wake is horror. But they both are really about authorship, and the illusions (and realities) of being captain of your destiny.
The protagonist in each piece gets help from a very specific profession, I won't risk spoiling it by mentioning what it is.
And the next question niggling at my imagination is, what does an open collaboration look like, one designed to maximize the scope of the story -an infinite game- as opposed to narrowing the story to just small happy ending for just a few winners?
Wake has more than one force wanting to share authorship with him- At times it reminds me of _Lathe of Heaven_. It's interesting to ask myself how he can tell the differences in their agenda.
